Walking/Trekking on Sicily

The island offers many exciting possibilities, it is not always safe and easy to follow the tracks, as they are not well signposted, BUT the scenery is breathtaking! In our “Walking Destinations” section we have made a few suggestions and would like to tell you a bit more about the interesting landmarks and beautiful spots worth visiting.

Etna

Obviously THE landmark of Sicily, which needs to be mentioned first, this unique and gigantic volcano towers over the whole east side of the island. The Parco del Etna and the climb up the volcano from the Refugio Sapienza are a nice challenge for hikers. (Although one should never head for the crater without a guide!)… More on the Etna

Cava Grande

The Cava Grande is a gorge near Avola Antico. The descent is difficult, but it is well worth it: One can then see the beautiful countryside, the river Cassibile and the surrounding small lakes – rewards indeed for the downhill climb. More on Cava Grande

Pantalica

Another gorge, near Sortino, offering a fantastic panorama. The Necropols are worth a special mention, caves in the cliff-faces, going back to the early stone age. More on Pantalica

Vendicari

Vendicari is a nature reserve south of Marina die Noto. Here one can go on leisurely walks and enjoy a swim in one of the lovely bays. In some places the countryside is very barren and covered in cactuses, so it feels a bit like being in the desert. There is also an old tuna fish factory here.

Gola del’Alcantara

Gola del’Alcantara is in the north east of Sicily, near Taormina. Here the Alcantara river has burrowed a deep gorge into rocks – nature pure – although sometimes a bit overcrowded, due to the lift situated here, which transports visitors down into the gorge. But it’s still worth a visit and for only 25 Euro you can take part in a (sort of) canyoning tour deep into the gorge – with guide, helmet and wetsuit. A top adventure. More on Gola del´Alcantara

Walking to the Arabian castle in Calatabiano

High above the roves of the village of Calatabiano towers a castle, to which a small path leads up to. It is only a short walk, but the view makes it worthwhile. On the third Sunday in May there is a special festival for a saint- the Calata, when the patron saint of the village is carried down the hill into the town.
