Gola dell Alcántara

Another nature spectacle is the canyon of the river Alcantara. A visit to the river with its waterfalls and the spectacular cliffs are a breath-taking experience. An overwhelming beauty of nature, particularly the “Gola dell Alcantara” is really worth seeing, a ravine with only 5 meters width and up to 50 meters height.

How to get there...

The canyon is southeast of the city Francavilla (SS 185). Next to the parking place you can borrow the necessary equipment: A pair of rubber boots. With an elevator or over a footpath you can make your way down to the river.

Three Options


In the main season between Mai/June and August/Septembre (the opening times depend on the weather) you can choose between three different Tours:

With the cheapest you can just go down in the canyon to lie in the sun at the river bank or walk around, from the little paths you can get a good look at the canyon.

The second tour brings you a little bit closer to the entrance of the canyon, with a pair of high gumshoes you can walk in the river towards the canyon to get a better sight.

The third option is the most expensive one, but it is in our opinion the best. This tour brings you directly in the canyon. together with a tour guide you will fight against rapids to go deep down in the canyons. For your safety you have to wear a helmet, swimming-vest and diving-suit. At some points you have to swim, at others you have to climb the slippery walls or even jump over rapids. In the end you will arrive at a small lake with a small waterfall and on your way there are some impressive views on the canyon. On your way back you will float through the rapids.

If you want to make the tour three, you have to sign that you phyical conditions is good, that you are without any health problems and that the tour oparators are not responsible for anything. As you can imagine this tour is nothing for small children or older people. Anyway, venturing deep into the canyon is definitivly worth the money and the risk.

At the entrance close to the parking space there is a small shop with souvenirs, here you can buy a small underwater camera, its nice to have some pictures from a trip like this.
