Messina lies at the northeast tip of the island, from here you can take the ferry the mainland of Italy. The cathedral, which was built in the time of the Normans, is the main attraction of the city.
Location and general information
The motorway A 18 connects the two cities Catania and Messina. And the ferry connects the city with the mainland of Italy. Messina has approx. 260,000 inhabitants and is the third biggest city on the island, only Palermo and Catania are larger.
Sights
As already mentioned the cathedral is worth seeing. In a small tower you can also see one of the largest astronomical clocks. The cathedral place with the well of Orion and the cathedral are to the most beautiful places in the city. Another important building is the church of “Santissima Annunziata di Catalani”, also this was built by the normans. The regional museum, with its archaeological finds, is worth a visit.
