The little town Mazara del Vallo lies in the province Trapani, just at the sea. About 46.000 inhabitants live here. Let’s say some words about the history: The foundation of Mazara del Vallo probably goes back to the Phoenicians and some centuries later it was the place where Saracens set foot on Sicily and where they established their first base on the isle. After the Saracens were dispelled by the Normans, King Roger I installed the first provisional Norman government on Sicily in Mazara.
The construction of the church San Nicolo Regale, which stands on the east side of the ancient port, also goes back to the times of the Normans. The fishing port itself is the economic navel of the town; it is called Porto di canale and it is certainly worth seeing.
