Lipari is the capital of the correspondent isle Lipari, which is the biggest of the Aeolian isles. The town is located quite picturesque in a bay; the former old town is the centre of the town. This part is situated on a hill and a rampart surrounds it; here you can find the archaeological museum, the dome and an archaeological excavation with wall pieces even from the New Stone Age. Besides, there are also a little park and a Greek theatre here. In the newer part of the town most of the stores and restaurants can be found, especially the main road, which runs parallel to the old town, invites to stroll about and every evening the road gets closed for traffic and restaurant tables conquer the middle of the road. South of the fortress there are two little churches; one of them is situated on kind of a mole.

On the whole, Lipari is a pretty town and especially beautiful are the little alleys in which citizens arranged numerous potted plants to make the townscape more amiable and greener than in other Sicilian towns. But it is also to say that you have seen pretty much all in one day. More interesting and worth seeing is the excursion to Stromboli to the active volcano.
